New York, NY— November 8, 2010 — The Italian Academy for Advanced Studies in America at Columbia University will present Italian flutist Matteo Cesari in a recital of works for unaccompanied flute by Salvatore Sciarrino.  Admission to the recital is free (email rw2115@columbia.edu to reserve tickets). The recital will be in the Teatro of the Italian Academy, 1161 Amsterdam Avenue just south of 118th Street in New York City.

Following flute and university studies in Italy, Matteo Cesari received highest honors for his thesis on Berio’s Harvard Lectures. He pursued flute studies with Mario Caroli at the Strasbourg Conservatoire, and is at present a doctoral student at the Conservatoire de Paris, studying with Sophie Cherrier and pursuing research on perception in the works of Brian Ferneyhough and Salvatore Sciarrino.

Matteo Cesari has won numerous awards and scholarships like the Kranichsteiner Muzikpreis in Darmstadt, First Prize at the 12th International Contemporary Music Competition in Krakow and the Severino Gazzelloni scholarship for the best interpretation of Berio's Sequenza I.

M. Cesari has performed extensively as a soloist and as a member of ensembles such as Accroche Note, Ensemble Itinéraire, Ensemble Algoritmo, and Ensemble Risognane. His performances has taken him to Italy ( Auditorio della Musica, Rome ), Paris ( Cité de la Musique, Auditorium du Musée d'Orsay ) , Strasbourg ( Auditorium France 3 ), London ( National Portrait Gallery ) and Japan ( Alti Hall, Kyoto ). 

He has worked side by side with leading contemporary composers giving premières of their music ; among them Salvatore Sciarrino, Ivan Fedele, Brian Ferneyhough, Bruno Mantovani, Stefano Gervasoni and Michael Finnissy who has written especially for him. 

A soon to be issued recording for the Kairos label is dedicated to Sciarrino and includes his monumental work Studi per Intonazione del Mare and the first world recording of Le Stagioni Artificiali.

In 2010, Matteo Cesari performed as a soloist in Pierre Boulez’s ...explosante-fixe... under the artistic direction of Pierre-André Valade in collaboration with IRCAM in Milan.
